What is blending and segmenting words?
Segmenting words is the process of breaking a word apart into each individual sound and then blending the sounds is the process of putting all those sounds back together. This is one of the most important foundational skills for preschoolers are they prep for learning to read.
DIY Dino Play Dough Stamps
Materials
-
a small square of cardboard
-
hot glue gun
-
a makeshift handle for your stamp (I used an old spice bottle)
-
play dough
-
lava cards from the November Pre-K Box
Directions
Step 1 You will draw a dino shape on the piece of cardboard. It will turn out better (and be easier for you to trace) if you simplify the shape.
Step 2 Use your glue gun to trace over the shape on your piece of cardboard and use hot glue to affix the cardboard shape to the makeshift handle.
Step 3 Have your child roll out some play dough in their favorite color and pick a word from your lava cards.
Step 4 Demonstrate for your child how to segment the word on the lava card and for each sound you hear, stamp the shape on the play dough.
Step 5 Once the word has been segmented, blend the individual sounds back together.
Step 6 Have your child repeat this process with 5 to 10 words, depending on the stamina of your child.
